It’s Not About The Fucking Cakes!

I saw our blog title that I am using for this article on a UK blog (great title I thought) and it got me thinking about the current debate going on in this country about gay marriage. At one of my straight functions I was filming, a young lady asked me about gay marriage and why it was so important to us (she clocked me as being gay – don’t ask me how!!). Anyway, I was telling her how my years of being together with my partner was great and wonderful but I wasn’t in the rush to have the state validate it. She asked why not?

I thought for a couple of moments and said it wasn’t about the idea of getting married that has many gay people in arms (in my opinion) – it is the right to get married that was so important. Its a civil right that straight people take for granted and its the perks of marriage (if you can call them that) that straight people are allow to partake in. As gay people, we just want to have that option and not seem like second class citizens who have to be treated as “civil unions.” No double taxation on health insurance, proper medical visitation rights, estate planning and death benefits – things that married heterosexual couples can do – we want to be able to do. Our solutions right now are few in far between, settle for “civil unions” if a state has it or pay an attorney to draw up a dozen different legal documents to protect our legal interest.

I am so happy that New Hampshire said yes to gay marriage. That makes 6 states now who have gay marriage (although Maine wants to have the voters decide). I don’t think our civil rights should be allowed to be determined by the majority. If that was the case – we would still have slavery, women would not be able to vote, all American Indians would live in one parcel of land, etc..etc..you get the point. Basic civil rights should be guaranteed, not determine by the popular will of the people. California clearly showed that – by 4% – the rights of thousands have been eliminated. To me, that seems very un-American.

Wow…what a night at J’s Bar

So much talent up there in Ft. Lauderdale – if you did not come in person or did not see the live broadcast, you missed a night of some fabulous live singing – as we broadcasted live the finals of Karaoke Idol at J’s Bar in Ft. Lauderdale.  I really enjoyed myself, the staff was great and the contestants were absolutely wonderful.  Since I didn’t know what to expect tonight, our broadcast was strictly a live event – I did not drop it to tape but the bar wants to do it again in 3 months and we will be there.

A special shout out to Manager Christina and Shannon for all of their help tonight, to my pageant friends who came by to say hi (Kennedy you never cease to amaze me!!), to the emcee (sorry..its late and for the life of me I can’t remember your name) and to the judges who had a tough time tonight choosing a winner – you guys and gals were great.  The crowd was super friendly and I definitely see why J’s Bar is a great place to have a drink, sit down with friends and have fun.  We hope to do more things with them in the future.

Time to call it night but I had to get on here and tell everyone how wonderful the night was.  Congrats to everyone who participated and congrats to the winner.  Until next time…sing your heart out….

British Film wins Miami Film Award

"Shank" - Written by Christian Martin, Directed by Simon Pearce

"Shank" - Written by Christian Martin, Directed by Simon Pearce

I don’t often write about what is going on in the LGBT film world (why that is, I don’t know) but hey I guess its time to start.  What better way to start than in our own backyard of Miami, Florida.  The Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival just wrapped up another successful year a couple of weeks ago with actors, filmmakers and fans joining in the parade of hopping all over the city to watch LGBT films.  One film I wanted to highlight today is directed by 21 year old newcomer Simon Pearce called “Shank.”  It won the Roger Walker-Dack Award for Emerging Talents in Queer Cinema.  Who says you have to be an old geriatric case to make a fresh and compelling film.

Shank follows the life of a teenage gang member who hides his secret sex life from his fellow gang members, hustles for sex and deals drugs to get by (okay…maybe that part is not so original).  Cal (played by Wayne Virgo) rescues a university student who is in the middle of a queer-bashing and their worlds collide as they fall in love together.  On the surface, it seems like the same shelp we see in gay film but the film has an unique treatment of gang culture coupled with unrelenting drama that fuses sex, violence and fast pace action in an attempt to turn upside down the usual coming-out story that we have all seen before.

"Shank" premieres at Miami Lesbian and Gay Film Festival

"Shank" premieres at Miami Lesbian and Gay Film Festival

The film has made a splash in the gay festival circuit and is due for a theatrical release in September of this year.  Writer, Producer Christian Martin told the Miami Press…”It was a risk working with a young, inexperienced cast and first-time director but this award, along with the international audience support for the film validates the courage of our conviction to push the gay genre in a new direction….”

Expect in on DVD by winter courtesy of gay friendly distributor TLA Releasing.

And there you have it, my first attempt at talking about queer cinema.   More to follow…..

Miss California – How pointless your views are!!

I was debating whether or not to chime in on the whole Miss California debacle.  Instead of debating on how good or bad she is as a person, I wanted to weigh in on how she is being the poster child for how stupid the arguments are against gay marriage.  While she has not come out and told the public per se why “she feels gay marriage is wrong,” she is really showing how pointless the arguments are against basic civil rights, the right to equal protection, the right to equal estate planning, the right to equal hospital visitation and end of life care, etc etc.  So I was trying to figure out the best way to show how her views are pointless.

Enter Lisa Nova – comedian, writer and You Tube Guru.  Adrian saw the video below on You Tube and told me I had to get it on our blog.  Lisa hits it on the head perfectly – by doing a parody of Miss California’s press conference she held.  Listen carefully and you will see why I think Miss California is actually helping us with gay marriage rather than huring us.  Lisa – great job with the video and everybody enjoy!!

Gays are in the gaming world – WTF Bioware!!

It’s 2009 and the gaming industry is still having a hard time dealing with the concept of gay and lesbian characters in their games.  While the industry can’t possible be blinded to the fact that gay folks are gamers and we have contributed to the success of the industry; publishers, designers and others involved have chosen for decades to sweep us under the carpet.

This notion could not have been brought more to life than the recent conundrum that occurred on the Bioware’s game forum for the new highly anticipated MMO on Star Wars: The Old Republic.    Eurogamer reported that a forum mod on BioWare’s Star Wars: The Old Republic banned users from discussing potential gay character relationships in the upcoming game.  Not only did they ban users from discussing potential gay characters, they closed the threads, banned any use of the word gay, homosexual, lesbian and basically censored the forums.

The community manager went so far as to write (and I quote):  “As I have stated before, these are terms that do not exist in Star Wars. Thread closed.”

Forum User Elikal's Avatar

Forum User Elikal's Avatar

Now to Bioware’s credit, they have since reopened the thread which has turned into (as of today) over 107 pages on the topic.  (Click here to get to thread) The person who started this thread (Forum user Eikal) is quoted in the forum as saying: “…..I am grateful Bioware has opened the thread again, and allowed the words gay and lesbian now. Though I can’t hide that I am quite disappointed. Bioware games had always been about complex ethical questions, about vast, diverse realities, and as such I had never expect Bioware of all companies to be so… narrow in this question. I was a Bioware fan so long… it was really a shock to see the thread closed. Thanks to all the supporters, and even those who in civilized words disagreed, since debating things is what makes a modern society work…”

If you guys remember way way back some time ago, I talked about a gay character in the Star Wars Old Republic named Juhani.  There are others like Goran Beviin (Human male Mandalorian commando, bounty hunter and a contract killer active under the New Republic – around 24ABY – 24 years after the battle of Yavin) and his partner who was a blacksmith named Medrit Vasur.  So yes they are there – not many, not openly obvious – but they exist.

Bioware – you just can’t pretend that the whole “gay thing” doesn’t exist and I think that community manager owes the gay gaming community an apology.    It may be easier to just ignore such things and pretend they don’t exist.  I would challenge everyone to simply assume that the Star Wars universe is rich in diversity and characters and it would just make sense that in that vast universe where all kinds of characters exist, there are some that are gay.  I like Bioware as a company – they make fantastic games but this whole censorship episode bothers me and it should bother you too.

The question is: Why Do You Care?

Keith Olbermann of MSNBC late night talk news gave an impassioned plea about Prop 8 that passed in California (similar to prop 2 that passed in my crappy home state of Florida).  You know the proposition that says love and marriage can only be between a man and a woman.  So Keith asked “Why Do You Care?” of the straight community who voted in favor of this measure.  I was quite impressed with his comments, his passion and his honesty.    I hope more people get to see it.  Tell me what you think.

What’s new on Planet Q TV – Homo Hip Hop and other videos

Greetings Planet Q TV Fans,

Every Thursday I try to do a major update to our family of websites and lately we have been behind as we prepare to move to a new office.  But alas, the update is finish (the move is not) and we have a lot of new videos to showcase on Planet Q TV this week.

In a couple of weeks, we hope to be showcasing new videos from “Out At The Center” – a video production series from the team at the LGBT community center in New York City and the TV trailer for Urban Raiders – the upcoming Hip Hop Reality TV show.

I am also placing a renew interest in Homo Hip Hop – the gay hip hop sub culture that exist in our

Granthm - Gay Hip Hop Artist

Granthm - Gay Hip Hop Artist

community unknown to many music fans.  If you are a rap or hip hop fan, then know that there are some great gay artist out there that are producing some fantastic music.  To listen to one artist, subscribe to the Click Click Expose Podcast Network (Click Here) – and listen to artist Granthm.

We will be showcasing his music for the next few weeks.  I also uploaded some new videos courtesy of You Tube on gay rapper Soce, an interview with Deadlee and gay rapper QBoy from the UK.
For our lesbian fans….you have not been left out (and come on guys – it won’t kill you to watch a video with girls in it) – we are featuring a fantastic video podcast show called “U People TV” from director Hanifah Walidah and her partner.  We have a couple of their podcast shows up, her music video and their latest podcast show “I heart Brooklyn Girls” – episode number 46.
Our video content producer “Drag Queen Posse” has uploaded several new videos including Part 1 and Part 2 of the Azucar Awards and a dreamgirl revue on stage.

Are you a Lady Gaga fan?  Check out her video “Just Dance” along with some behind the scene footage that is fun to watch.  Lady Gaga is courtesy of Interscope Records.

Finally I had a chance to email chat with a viewer who is running a science video sharing website who uploaded an interesting animation video on HIV replication for all you medical and science nerds (just kidding) – the video is quite interesting.

Lastly, if you are a gay pageant fan – then the team over at Click Click Expose  has filmed their last major pageant for the 2008 year which was Missouri Entertainer of the Year Preliminary pageant held in St. Louis, MO.  We have preview videos from both Friday and Saturday night and Adrian (with his Flip Phone in had) did a behind the scenes look at the pageant.

So much to watch…we hope you find something you like.  Remember, share your videos, join our community and let us know what you think as we provide the best place to find LGBT videos from all over the world.

Happy Viewing!!!

John Barrowman & the Torchwood TV Show

Torchwood Team

Torchwood Team

If you are a sci fi fan like myself, then you know the actor John Barrowman.  Mr. sexy with his bi-love interest Gareth David-Lloyd (Ianto) in the BBC hit TV show “Torchwood.”  It’s an off shoot of Doctor Who where the 51st century time traveller has taken up residence in Cardiff fighting aliens in the city.  Well the actor is openly gay and does not hide that fact (way to go John) and I found this video of him on You Tube that celebrates his relationship with his partner of 16 years Scott Gill.  It goes to show you that you can have a successful acting career and still be out, proud and gay.  My hats off to them both.  Can’t wait for season 3 of Torchwood do out sometime in May of 2009 in the UK and shortly afterwards here in America on BBC America.

Podcast Show Network is back this week

Many of you know that we have been hard at work filming and editing International Week 2008 and the Entertainer Of The Year pageant.  For many of our international fans, local fans (and those who don’t give 3 shits about pageants- LOL), we took a few weeks off as our video production schedule had been to intensive to keep the podcast shows going.  While relief is not here yet, the podcast shows are back with 5 brand new shows this week.

The Drag Queen Posse Podcast Show - Number 3

The Drag Queen Posse Podcast Show - Number 3

Our Ft. Lauderdale friends over at the Drag Queen Posse show are at it again with an all new show talking missing money, lawsuits and undercover bathroom investigations.

Don’t forget to check out our resident DJ from New York – DJ Carlos Dali as he spins new house music this week called “Wild Pitched Pussy – Part 1” (don’t ask – I don’t know where he gets the names from) along with our weekly queer history facts and gay news for this week.  And of course, pageant fans don’t forget our live show every Thursday at 7 pm Eastern Standard Time called the Pageant Soup Podcast Show.  This week (or rather today Aug 7th), we talk EOY with the current reigning Mr. EOY for 2008 Savion Simpson Black.

Congrats Nina West – EOY 2008 – Some Notes and News

Nina West

Nina West

Wow…what a contest….I have to first say congratulations to Nina West and Savion Simpson Black for an outstanding job winning Entertainer of the Year 2008 and to all of the contestants who competed this year.   This was an outstanding year for pageant entertainment.

After 17 lonnnggg hours of driving, we finally made it back to sunny Miami, FL.  While I enjoy filming this year, man driving that long is crazy – but we had a crew of 4 this year and plane tickets are way to high (LOL).  And to make matter worse, when we got back, I had to go sit in meetings for 3 hours about how we are going to tackle the next 3 weeks of video productions.  I am whipped.

Now,  Adrian and I will begin the long long process of editing and putting together this year’s EOY videotape.  First off, many of you took advantage of our pre-order special.  THANK YOU.  I will fire off a confirmation email to you Wednesday or Thursday.  I just finished printing all of the pre-orders in the order they were received – so you are all set.  Second, International Week 2008 was filmed by us the weekend before EOY.  Sorry EOY fans – I have to do International Week first and get it done before starting on EOY.  Third, I have a wedding I did weeks before both pageants that I have to finished and I have two weddings coming up in the next two weekends in August.  The next 4 weeks are going to be a real challenge for us as we try to quickly put together these DVDs while still giving you a great presentation.  BUT WE ARE UP FOR THE CHALLENGE.  I will be keeping everyone up to date on this blog on the progress of the DVD, let you know what I am working on and some of the effort needed to put together these DVDs.  I did this last year and people seemed to like it so I will do it again this year.

I want to give a BIG THANK YOU to all of our fans and supporters.  Those who came by to say hi (in Baltimore or Louisville), those who

Thank you!

Thank you!

have thanked us in threads, forums or in person and those who have supported us over the years.  Many of you knew us back in our Houston days when we were Black Stylez Entertainment.  A lot has changed since 1999 and we have gotten much bigger and and I hope much better.  It is because of your support and commitment that Adrian, Tara, Blossom, Eric, Ailyn and myself continue to do what we do and love bringing you all great LGBT entertainment – whether its pageants, podcasting, videos, whatever.  So I just want to personally say thank you for your support – PLEASE always share with us and let us know how we can do things better for you.

Until the next blog, tomorrow – LET THE EDITING BEGIN.  But first – my bed is callling me.  Oh, watch the preview videos of International Week 2008 and EOY 2008 on Planet Q TV – our own video sharing website just for our community.

What a crazy last couple of weeks

Hey everybody, I think I am finally going off the deep end.

What a crazy couple of weeks

It has been a crazy last couple of weeks.  A good kind of crazy but crazy nethertheless.  One of the things about my job as a videographer that I like is that we are fortunate to get a variety of video assignments.  I am not just a corporate videographer or a pagent videographer or a wedding videographer – I have gotten to do a variety of things over the last few years that keep this job interesting.

So in the last two weeks I have filmed two weddings – one a rich Swede was marrying this beautiful arabic girl (you should have seen the reception) and the other a jewish wedding where they were celebrating Jerusalem Independence day after the wedding (boy was I out of place the only black guy in the whole place).  Then I was filming the MCC Church People of African Decent conference celebrating having an includive church for all races (3 days of conference meetings and worship services) and finally the 2008 Miss Duval Plus pageant. CRAZY….and on top of that we have relaunched the Planet Q TV website (our own video sharing website) and now I must move over 400 videos to the new server!!!

So you can wonder why I have not been on the blogs lately – I just haven’t had the time.  But I get to come up for air this week – I have bout 70% of all of this done so life gets to be a little easier this week hopefully!!

The podcast network is updated for this week – Pageant Soup Podcast Show (which will be taking a two week break after today), gay news week in review, queer history facts and house music from New York DJ Carlos Dali.  You can subscribe to the podcast network via iTunes and have the shows downloaded to you automatically or just head to our home page and click on the green button that says listen now. Also make sure you check out Planet Q TV – we will be up to about 200 videos moved over by today with more coming soon. DON’T FORGET – JOIN THE COMMUNITY, PUT IN YOUR PROFILE & UPLOAD YOUR VIDEOS TO OUR ALL GAY VIDEO SHARING WEBSITE.

until the next time….

Will America ever learn…..race in America

There are days when I just want to go live on a small island and disavow myself from the rest of the world.  Why do I say that?  Listening to Jermiah Wright’s specch last night at the NAACP fundraising event and then reading the countless posts that have been placed online makes me think that our great country still has not learn its lesson.  I have not seen so much race baiting, racial hatred and political pandering done by EVERYONE – the right , the left and everybody in the middle.  And now, somehow, just because Obama was in the same church as Wright – that somehow Obama has become “less of a man” and is not fit to be our next President.

Whether you are gay, black, hispanic, asian, arabic, a woman or an american indian – it seems that when anyone questions the struggle, oppression and history of people in the “minority” and compare that same struggle, oppression and history of people in the “majority” – somehow you are living in the past and being racist.

I long for the day when people can accept each other for who they are…. not what “label” society has placed on them.  I long for the day when we as a society can sit down and have a honest and hearful discussion of where we have been as a nation and where we need to go.  I long for the day when people realize that “your neighbor” is very different from you, learns differently from you, enjoys life differently from you and that doesn’t make them better or worse – it just makes them, THEM. Understanding is the key to acceptance.  Understanding doesn’t necessarily mean agreement.  You can understand and disagree but wouldn’t it be nice if we could understand and accept everyone?

or maybe my own island would just be better…..

HD DVD vs Blu Ray vs DVD – WTF!!

Okay – unless you have been on another planet, you have probably heard (even though you may not care) – that Blu Ray has won the high definition battle. Hooray some people say…hold the phone – others are saying.

blueraywarover.jpg

Personally I think everyone loses in this war. Let’s forget about the fact that: 1) consumers were screaming bloody murder about having to choose a format, 2) that consumers are slowly (and I do mean slowly) adopting high definition in their homes, and 3) we can even forget the fact that prices are very high for high definition players and the movies. If we forget all of those things – there is one thing that matters – Sony gets to now dictate whatever price they want to get you to adopt the new format of choice.

Now, of course, I can’t blame them for this. After all if you go back in time, DVD players were outrageously high for several years before people could afford them. Fast forward to the present and Blu Ray & HD DVD prices were cut drastically after only one year!! GO FIGURE!! You can bet your bottom dollar that manufactures were not making much money on their hardware or software. So now, you better believe that the Blu Ray folks are going to raise prices little by little in an effort to recoup what they loss when they had to battle HD DVD. That’s why I think we all will lose in this format war that ended last month. I forsee that there will not be an affordable Blu Ray player coming out anytime this year (I mean like sub $200 affordable). That sucks…I love high definition and when a movie or tv show or documentary is filmed, edited and transferred in glorious 1080i or 1080p – the video is too die for….but I will be damn if I will pay $400 for a Blu Ray player and $40 for a Blu Ray movie…ain’t going to happen. And what most people forget is that most movies are not shot in true high def – but rather film that is transferred to high def (unless maybe they are shooting in 4K with the Red One but I digress).

So would I buy a Blu Ray player right now? NOPE. Do we even offer high definition as an option for our customers to buy? NOPE. Will I buy one in the future? Yeah maybe a year or 2 from now when they figure out what profile spec they want to use, 1080p TV prices drop a little more and Blu Ray players drop prices some more – then yeah – definitely will do it. Will we offer it to customers and begin filming in High Def? A year from now – yeah we will be forced too…

But for now, what will I do instead? I did what most people think is crazy. I bought a HD-DVD player, bought a bunch of HD DVD movies at ridiculously low prices to finish out my collection and can now watch movies in glorious 1080p at a price to die for. Sure after May, there will be no more new HD DVD movies – but my player will upconvert all my standard DVDs to near HD quality, I have some great movies on HD (there are over 450 in the western market alone & 800+ globally) and I can enjoy high def now without destroying my pocketbook for the next year or two. When I am done, I expect to have maybe 30 HD DVD titles (maybe more) and a player that would normally have cost me $1100 but instead only cost me around $500. Now to bad a deal!!!

It is just a shame that the only gay movie right now out on High Def (that I know) is Brokeback Mountain!!
