DVD Update #8 – Entertainer of the Year

Hey pageant fans,

It’s going on midnight again and here is the latest update from the DVD front:

1)  Sunday night of EOY is finished including DVD authoring and Encoding so all 3 nights are completed.  I wanted to thank Nina West, Dominique Shappelle & Dominique Polo for letting me use their original videos for the DVD.  Unfortunately, due to time constraints and some mpg2 issues, I was unable to pull your videos for the DVD.  Contact me via email and I have some other options for you if you want to explore them;

2)  I must now begin the duplication process for Friday and Saturday night (400 actual disks).  I am going to work on those duplications tonight.  I have only gotten through about 120 or so, so tomorrow I will work on the rest (about 480 more disks ugghh).  Tomorrow I will also create the DVD covers (about 100 of them).  Once the duplications and DVD covers are created and done, I will begin the process of packaging each combo set together and assigning them to a buyer.  All of the mailing labels for all buyers have already been created and are ready to go.

3)  The pageant pay per view (our online pageant digital download and rental service) has been updated with the following videos: a)  2006 Mr. Duval, b) 2004 Mr. and Miss Black America, c) 2008 Miss International Plus, d) 2008 Mr. EOY and e) Part 1 of the Mr/Miss International 2008 – which I am uploading now.  Enjoy the videos as we give you another alternative to those who can’t afford to buy every DVD that comes out.  After some feedback, we have improved the descriptions and title fields of all videos that are available online – so you will have a better idea what each video contains so you can rent or buy exactly what you are looking for.

That’s it for now.  Time to call it a night.

DVD Update #7 – Entertainer of the Year

Okay…I’m mad – more like annoyed right about now.  Why do you ask?  I çan’t tell you how many times I have explained to pageant owners, bar owners and theatre managers about the necessity of good lighting when you are videotaping.  It’s really simple – bad light=bad video, good light=good video, excellent lighting=fantastic video.  There is a reason why TV news room have tons of light on their sets – it’s because they want the best possible TV picture.  Now I know pageants are different and harsh heavy lights can wear on a contestant or call attention to heavy make up application – BUT COME ON – disco lighting, mood lighting and changing colors every 1/2 sec just doesn’t work – and I have rarely come across a place where a follow spot was bright enough to give off a good video presentation.  It burns me up when I sit down to preview a video after working hard to edit only to find out that the quality suffers from crappy lighting.

Okay…I’m through venting (Kudos…Kudos…Kudos…to the Center Stage Theatre in Baltimore – you guys got it right with the lighting).  The Mr. DVD is finished and the DVD authoring and encoding is done.  Other than creating the DVD cover and label, the Mr. EOY DVD is finished.  The Friday night prelim of the Miss Division is done and by midnight I will have finished with the DVD authoring and encoding.  Other than the creating the DVD cover, Friday Prelim (which consists of Opening Number, Creative Presentation and the first part of Talent and Q&A) is finished.  Tomorrow (Monday) I will author and encode Saturday Prelim and create the DVD covers for all nights.  Tomorrow I will also upload all of the video from finals night (which is about 10 hours of video) so I can start editing on Tuesday.

That’s it for now…short and sweet.  More to follow soon.

DVD Update #6 – Entertainer of the Year

Hey pageant fans – this post is long – grab a drink, a cup of coffee and away we go,

About to call it for a day tonight but wanted to let you know where we stand.  The Mr. portion of the DVD is 80% complete.  All of the Thursday competition is done, the Creative Formal Wear from Friday night is done.  I just have to add swimwear and crowning that was done on Saturday and do an intro for the video then the Mr. DVD will be complete.  As many of you are aware, the Mr. portion of the competition ran almost day and date as the Miss portion of the contest.  So for Friday and Saturday, I will have to pull those portions out of the Miss and compile them as disk 2 for the Mr. EOY DVD.

Friday is done for the Miss portion which covered Creative Presentation for all contestants and Talent & Question and Answer.  Talent was for contestants #1 (Daphne Ferraro) thru contestants #13 (Amber Stone).  Question and Answer was for contestants #14 (Rachael Erikks) thru contestants #27 (Feleasha Savage).  What I am doing before I end tonight (it’s already almost 9pm) is to build the individual files (from the edited timeline) that will be used to compile the Final Friday DVD for the Miss.  So it looks like Disk 1 for Friday will be the opening number and Creative Presentation.  Disk 2 for Friday will be Question & Answer and Talent.

Why do we spread it out over 2 disks?  Our DVDs are produced on DVD-5 type disk – these disks only hold roughly 2 hours of compressed video.  However, we try not to push to close to the 2 hour mark as the more you put on a disk, the higher the compression, the less detail in the quality.  While most people probably could not tell that much difference between 1 hour and 45 minutes on a DVD vs 2 hours – I can tell so I don’t do it.  Plus, for some reason this year – the guys on the lights at Club Connection thought it was Disco Night circuit 1970 and was killing me with the lighting (sorry guys but this year was a tad disappointing) so I would rather compressed for better quality than content.  Unfortunately, to put pageants on DVD-9 type disk at 3+ hours is just not cost effective and you would be paying a much higher price to purchase your DVDs.  While I know it is more convenient for you to not have to swap disk after disk – we have always felt that price was more important.  I don’t believe in selling pageant videos more than $60 (not including taxes and shipping & handling) so I am committed to keeping our prices affordable.  Gas prices are up – our prices are not!!!

So what’s on tap for tomorrow?  I already have one camera capture for Saturday’s filming.  I have to capture (ingest) the other camera – so that’s 5 hours I have to move to the workstation.  Once that’s done, I will sync both camera shots and then watch all 5 hours to edit the raw footage in a two-camera shot.  I will start on the 2-camera edit tomorrow but probably won’t finish.  Sunday I will wrap up the 2-camera edit, do audio adjustments, drop in the graphics & titles and prepare the files for the final DVD.  If all goes well, Saturday’s filming and editing should be done Sunday night.  Wash, rinse and repeat for the Finals night which will take place on Monday and Tuesday (although instead of capturing 5 hours – I have to capture 10 hours of video – 2 cameras).  So let’s see – Wednesday – Video intros, Finalize final files, DVD author and encode – Thursday – put orders together, print DVD covers, make 100 copies of all three nights (that’s printing 100 DVD covers, duplicating 600 Disks and labeling 600 disks) – creating over 85 mailing labels and drag it all to the post office – and since everyone else is working on other projects – I have to do all of this BY MYSELF.  Hmmmm…I think I was telling you guys Wednesday I was going to mail the DVDs – NOPE…ain’t goin happen (LOL – sorry) – more like Friday & Saturday & Monday.

So, if everything goes as plan – Friday’s deliveries will consist of all Pre-Orders placed before June 30th, 2008.  Saturday’s deliveries will consist of all Pre-Orders placed between July 1 and July 31st.  Monday’s deliveries will consist of all regular priced orders from Aug. 1 through the present.

Okay that’s it for now…more later.  Have a great night.  Let me know if you have any questions.

Simba R Hall on Episode 43 – Pageant Soup Podcast Show – Live Thursday 7pm EST

Simba R. Hall - Mr. International 2008
Simba R. Hall – Mr. International 2008
Simba R. Hall started his pageantry career in 2002 on the stage of 708 in Atlanta, GA competing for Mr. Liberty International.  With the crowd silent anticipating what to expect, he has transformed into what his name truly represents; the king of Prideland.  In such a short time, Simba has pioneered his way into the field of pageantry not to be forgotten by the people he touches with his vibrant smile, humble personality, charismatic talents, and eager determination.
Simba was attracted in the field of pageantry because of his desire to have a voice in the community and his love of performing on the stage.  He has shown to be diligent in all systems he has come in contact with.  Conquering Mr. Renaissance was the beginning of Simbaʼs dynamic career.  As Mr. Renaissance, Mr. Hall started the Kingʼs Alliance which united all the mister national titles together giving back to the community.  This cultivated Male Entertainers of National Systems (M.E.N.S.) Night.  All the male systems came together and each king performed one number along with an opening and a closing performed by all the current national kings including three of the top four (Continental, Entertainer of the Year and USA).
Next, Simba was appointed the emeritus of Mr. Global International.  Under his reign, the system grew to have seven competitive boys for the first year and Memphis took credit for hosting its first Male National pageant.  Simba went on to win Mr. Sweetheart International where he is now revered, adored, and serves as an official judge for the Nationals.  During his reign, Simba also went on to conquer the title of Mr. Continental.  Although this was the pentacle of his career, he continued to serve both titles with style and dignity.  Under his Continental reign, the system boasts growth from eight preliminaries to eighteen.
Simba also works outside the community as a professional opera singer.  In this line of study, he has sung in churches and recital halls across the US.  He just recently returned from Europe with the Atlanta Opera chorus where he toured singing Porgy and Bess.  He will return in October for three weeks to finish the tour.
Simba is reigning as Mr. International and continues to make a difference throughout the GBLT community.  While catapulting to new levels in the community, he merges his professional career by planning and working on his solo recital and debut live recording late this winter in Atlanta, GA.

DVD Editing Update #5 – EOY and International Week 2008

Okay pageant fans,

Its late but I wanted to give you a quick update on where we are at as of today – Wednesday at 11:30pm.

1)  Mr. and Miss International and Miss International Plus 2008 is finished.  If you preordered a copy – your DVD is in the mail on the way to you.  Three camera edits are always difficult and time consuming to do but we are finished and we think you will be happy with the results.  To my knowledge, the International Pageantry system is the first system to have a 3 camera filming of a pageant.  Couple that with a gorgeous theatre and you have a pretty nice pageant (in my humble opinion) to watch.  We hope you enjoy the DVD.

2)  EOY fans…I know you guys are chomping at the bit finding out when the DVDs will be finished.  Well Tropical Fay put us behind by a day with local power outages but never fear – after a couple cans of Monster energy drink (a sponsor of EOY hehe) – anyway – lots of energy to do a power edit today.  Luckily, I already had 8 hours of video uploaded to our workstation thanks to Adrian so that actually put me ahead of the ball game.  So for those of you who have not been following the blog – we start with a all video, then combing and editing the two camera shots, then dropping in the graphics and names, then applying color corrections and audio corrections where necessary, then creating the first draft files to be put together for the final edits.

3)  Thursday night of Mr. EOY is done.  The only thing I have left to do is to create an intro to the video.  The first hour of Friday night is done through Sashay Lorez (contestant number 11).  Tomorrow  I will finish the rest of Friday and then I have to upload Adrian’s Saturday camera so that will take about 4 hours.  Thursday is also the day I update the Podcast Network and we do the live Pageant Soup Podcast Show (Thursday’s show will have Simba R Hall as our guest) so I will have to stop editing after about 8 hours or so.  So that is where we are at.

4)  I have everybody’s pre-order all set up and ready to go – there are a couple of you that I still have to charge but I have your info so you are okay.  Other than that, it looks like we are back on schedule despite some delays.

5)  The good thing is that the wedding I had prior to EOY and International Week, I am still waiting on the bride to get me some pictures to finish her video so I have only had to stop once from editing the pageants to work on their video – so pageant fans caught a break which is good.

More news to come soon.  Thanks everybody for your patience.  It’s coming….I promise.

DVD Editing Update #4 – EOY and International Week 2008

You ever have that feeling when you just want to throw your computer out a 5 story building?  There is nothing like pushing the limits of your computer and I have definitely done that with finishing up with International Week.  For those of you who was at the International Week pageant on Saturday, you know that was a lonnnggg night because the Plus competition was also with the prelim competition of the Mr and Miss.  Well I had over 5 1/2 hours on the timeline with 3 cameras and tons of color correction that eats up more hard drive space than termites eat wood.  I never thought I would be saying that 600gb of hard drive space is not enough but I think I would be happy with a couple of terrabytes – but I digress.

For the news you want to hear….I am one day ahead of schedule and I should be finished with the DVD encoding for Plus competition within a couple of hours today (Saturday).  I have finished prelim of Mr. and Miss so the entire Mr. and Miss competition is now completed.  Later on this evening I will prepare everyone’s order who pre-ordered a copy and it will go in the mail on Monday (sorry no mail delivery on Sunday).  Everything will go by USPS priority mail so you should get it in 2 to 3 days.  We are happy with the look of the video – The Center Stage Theatre is a BEAUTIFUL place to film so the quality of the video in our opinion is excellent – we also are doing some new things with DVD menus and DVD packaging that we think you will like – nothing major but its the little things that we hope make a difference.

EOY is still on schedule for next week so EOY fans hang in there – you are next.

More news to come soon.

DVD Editing update #3 – EOY and International Week 2008

Here is the latest update on EOY and International Week 08.

1)  DVD authoring and encoding is done for the Finals Night of International Week 2008 and for Friday Prelim Disk 1.  There is a first play issue that I have to correct on the Finals Night Disk 1 but other than that, I just have to create and print the DVD covers and we are all set.

2)  I am currently uploading the last day (Sat) to complete for International Week.  The rest of the prelim for the Mr/Miss and the entire Plus competition.  I have 18 hours of video (3 cameras) I have to ingest so I won’t be able to start editing until Late Wednesday or early Thursday.  I should be finished with the editing by Saturday and finish with the DVD encoding on Sunday.

3)  Based on my current editing schedule (I still have a wedding I need to finish) – EOY ingesting should start on the 18th.  While I don’t have 3 cameras to deal with, I do have an extra 2 days of filming with the Mr. contest so there is more than 25 hours of video that needs to be transferred before I can begin editing.  So I am thinking 18th thru 20th (ingesting) – 20th thru 23rd (editing) – 24th (DVD authoring and encoding) – 25th thru 27th (shipping of DVD orders).  That is my current estimate.

4)  Based on my current schedule, I do not think I will be putting up a preview video for International Week finals competition.  I will use another workstation to put up a couple of videos of entertainers or contestants in a couple of days.

That’s it for now.  More coming soon.
